Twentieth-century preacher and teacher Howard Thurman, mentor to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., gives us a vision of what the Beloved Community can look like here and now, in our tumultuous times. Dr. Thurman founded the first intentionally multiracial, multifaith congregation in the United States, the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples, still gathering in San Francisco today. His fierce but gentle spirit lives on in his words and inspiration.
The Alegria Singers offer Dr. Thurman’s poem, “The Work of Christmas,” set to music by Elizabeth Alexander in a beautiful anthem called “When the Song of the Angels Is Stilled”: “To find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among [kindred], to make music in the heart” … Come, let us rejoice in the work that is ours to do!
Worship Leader: Rev. Nancy Palmer Jones
Worship Associate: Christy Baker
