In honor of May 17’s International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, we lift up the story of a successful fight for LGBTQ rights, led by young people in Morgan Hill. In 1998, six students sued the Morgan Hill Unified School District on the grounds that its employees ignored or minimized (or added to) the anti-gay harassment that the students were experiencing. The case went all the way to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals—and it affected families in First Unitarian and beyond. Our member Anne Rosenzweig companioned those who fought this case throughout its six-year journey to justice. She brings the stories of those times, and we look at what stories we’re called to change now.

The music includes Holly Near’s “We Are a Gentle, Angry People” (a song with its own story to tell), sung by Karl Vidt, along with other rousing anthems to liberation for all.
