Before we begin this service people of faith and particularly us religious leaders call and name the need to confess and repent for the harm we have incurred intentionally and out of ignorance to the LGBTQIA+ community. We acknowledge the hate our traditions said in the many false names of the sacred. These actions hold anti-queer religious/spiritual doctrine at fault for loss of life, poor mental and physical health, and condoning harm to queer people. We will not forget our hypocrisy. In this service are queer, trans, cis, and straight clergy from multiple religious traditions. We aim to represent true respect for humanity, in this service, as it relates to sexuality and gender identities and will continue this sacred way of being in our spiritual practices of inclusivity.
In our humility, we call upon our ancestors of love. We call upon the energy that facilitates compassion and love. We call upon queer people who we have lost, due to society’s lack of love and acceptance. We call upon migrants we’ve lost due to hostile borders. We speak blessings of gratitude to, and for, the earth. We speak blessings of gratitude for our lives, knowing each breath is an opportunity for love, acceptance, and joy. We bless our queer siblings for teaching us the power of love and compassion. May that energy fill this service today. We bless our ally siblings for understanding the power and importance of love outside of their own lived experience.
