San Jose UU is excited to launch CommUUnity Gardening, a hands-on program that brings congregants together to support one another—and the environment—through shared gardening efforts. In the spirit of 18th- and 19th-century barn-raisings, where neighbors came together to help build a new barn, CommUUnity Gardening brings that same collaborative energy to local gardens. This initiative is about more than just planting—it’s about building community, strengthening resilience, and deepening our connections with each other and the Earth, all while learning practical, sustainable gardening techniques you can use at home.

🌱 Join Us for the First CommUUnity Gardening Event!
🗓 Saturday, June 14, starting at 9:00 AM
📍 Willow Glen neighborhood, a few miles south of FUCSJ
(Exact address will be shared with those who sign up.)

We’ll be sheet mulching—layering cardboard and mulch—to kill off a grass lawn and kickstart its transformation into a thriving space filled with drought-tolerant California native plants.

You bring: Gardening clothes & a hat for sun protection

We’ll provide: supplies & refreshments, plus some seedlings (like melons, pumpkins & beans) you can take home.

Sign up by contact, Indra Frank at indfrank@gmail.com or 317-292-7311.

This event is proudly sponsored by FUCSJ’s new Environmental Justice Ministry Team.

🌻 Have a garden project of your own that could use a helping hand? Let us know. We’re looking for future project sites. Particularly ones that are related to edible gardening, California natives or other drought-tolerant landscaping, or increasing biodiversity. (Hosts are expected to provide materials and refreshments.) Email revmatthew@sanjoseuu.org to start the conversation.

Let’s grow something beautiful—together!
