On April 28, 2024, nearly 100% of the voting members chose to call Rev. Matthew McHale as our next settled minister! We are so glad to welcome him and his family to FUCSJ! Rev. Matthew, his wife Anna, and their daughter River are now planning their move from the LA area to San Jose, and he will begin his ministry with us in August. Keep watching the weekly news blast and website for updates from the Board and Welcome Committee.
Rev. Matthew grew up attending the UU Church of Long Beach. He
received an MDiv from Starr King School for the Ministry in 2014. Rev.
Matthew has served as the Settled Minister for the Emerson UU
Church in Canoga Park (in Los Angeles) since 2016. His many
strengths include creative worship, dynamic leadership, and a wealth
of experience with justice work within Unitarian Universalism and in
the wider world.
Rev. Matthew believes UUism has much to offer the world, and looks
forward to bringing his skills and experience to helping our
Congregation more effectively offer its light to the world by making
love visible. He says, “my vision for Ministry is one of transforming our
communities into places of healing, support, justice, vision, and hope.
Our religious communities can be models for the world we are creating.”
Rev. Matthew will lead two services, on Sunday, April 21, and Sunday,
April 28. After the April 28th service, Congregational members will
vote whether or not to call Rev. Matthew as our new minister. During
the week between those sermons, he will meet with church members
and friends, staff, committees, RE parents, and governing bodies, as
well as introduce his wife, Anna, and their daughter, River (8) to us
and to San Jose.
