Dog Policy for the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Jose

Purpose
This policy establishes guidelines for the presence of dogs on church premises, promoting inclusivity while ensuring safety and comfort for all members of our community.
Sunday Services
– Service dogs are welcome at all Sunday services
– Handlers must maintain control of their dogs at all times
– Dogs must remain with their handlers throughout the service
Non-Service Groups & Events
– All well-behaved dogs are welcome at non-service events
– Dog owners must demonstrate responsible ownership
– Dogs must be leashed at all times unless in a designated off-leash area
– Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs
– Dogs showing disruptive, or aggressive, behavior must be removed immediately
– Event organizers may establish additional guidelines appropriate to specific activities
Downstairs Areas & Staff Offices
– Staff members may bring their dogs to work with prior approval from supervisory staff
– Staff dogs must be well-behaved and not disruptive to church operations
– Staff are responsible for the care, supervision, and cleanup of their dogs
– Dogs must be kept in the staff member’s offices
– Staff dogs should not be permitted in food preparation areas
Dog Committee
– A Dog Committee consisting of 3-5 church members will administer this policy
– The committee will include at least one dog owner and one non-dog owner
– Committee responsibilities include:
  – Addressing concerns or conflicts related to dogs on church property
  – Providing education about the policy to the congregation
  – Recommending policy updates to the church board
  – Maintaining a registry of regular canine visitors
  – Mediating any dog-related disputes or incidents
– The Dog Committee will meet as needed
General Guidelines
– All dogs must be current on vaccinations
– Owners assume liability for any damage or injury caused by their dogs
– Consideration should be given to members with allergies or fear of dogs
– The church reserves the right to ask any dog and owner to leave if these guidelines are not followed
Implementation
This policy will be reviewed from time to time by the Board to ensure it continues to meet the needs of our community.
