What am I signing up for?

During the registration process you are asked to register grocery cards, credit/debit cards and retail credit cards that you use for purchases. When you use any of these registered cards with a participating merchant partner, the merchant makes a contribution—generally 1% to 5% of what you spend--to your designated group or organization. Remember to use your cards for purchases and you will automatically earn money for the church. (See a sample list of merchants at the bottom of this page.)

How does my group get paid?

Your organization will receive an electronic deposit into its bank account every month. This deposit will include contributions from all of your group's participating supporters.

How do I sign-up?

Go to www.escrip.com. Click on “Sign-up.” Find the church by zip code, 95112, or name: “First Unitarian Church of San Jose.” Enter information as requested, including your Safeway card number, Macy’s card number and credit card numbers. If you don’t have a computer or would rather not sign up online, you can complete a form and I will sign you up (and will shred your form immediately afterward).

How do I add the church to my existing eScrip account?

If you are already an eScrip participant, go to www.escrip.com, click on “my eScrip,” enter your eScrip password (you did save it, right?) click on “Change my group selection”, and select “First Unitarian Church of San Jose,” to add it to your other eScrip recipients or to replace one.

Safeway Cards

Safeway donates 1% of what you spend per family per month up to $399 and 2% for $400 or more. Only purchases made using your Safeway club card count, and only if you have registered your Safeway card with eScrip. If you no longer have your card and use your phone number instead when you shop there, just phone Safeway at (877) SAFEWAY. (You can still continue to use your phone number at Safeway.) Safeway requires that you renew your eScrip connection each fall.


EScrip is very conscious of security for your personal information and does not sell any of it. Many families in the church have been doing eScrip with their kids’ schools for several years with no security issues. “ESI will not license, sell, exchange or distribute any personally identifying information about eScrip participants to any third parties not directly involved in the eScrip program.” While you must give eScrip your email address, you can opt out of receiving e-mail from them.
